Cooking great Julia Child was born on Aug. 15, 1912. That means she would have been 97 this Saturday.

To celebrate her culinary genius, we’re asking you to do something in her honor and share the details in a post below. You could cook one of her recipes, watch the film “Julie & Julia” at the theaters, or dine out on a favorite dish you associate with her.

COCO Chocolate Lounge and Bistro, 18402 U.S. 281, is one place offering a dish in her memory. Boeuf bourguignon is the restaurant’s special this weekend for $19. Reservations are recommended and can be made by calling (210) 491-4480.

Whatever you do, don’t forget the butter. It was one of Julia’s favorites.

  1. I saw a tweet from Brasserie Pavil that they will also be running a special on Saturday & Sunday to honor Ms. Child: Crepes Piperade with two eggs any style and Gruyere Mornay Cheese Sauce. Mmmm- cheese sauce!

  2. I tried an adaptation of Julie Child’s Lobster Thermidor (page 221 in her cookbook). When I served it that night for my family, my son, who was in middle school at the time, exclaimed–Mom! You should give this recipe to the school cafeteria!”. It really wasn’t like Julia’s, but I received the greatest compliment of my cooking for over 60 some odd years. It’s what Julia Childs did to inspire us that counts! Granny Virginia M.

    • Hi Virginia – you’re absolutely right. I am inspired by Julia in many ways, too. Her books and methods are there for the taking — and fooling around with recipes is the right of every cook! Looks like you taught your son well, too. Thanks for sharing your story with SavorSA!
