Spiced Figs

A few minutes of work results in a spicy dish of lightly stewed figs.

Spiced Figs

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 teaspoon ground ginger
2 whole cloves
1 pod star anise
1/2 cup sugar
4 strips orange zest (use a vegetable peeler)
2 lemon zest strips
12 figs

Place spices, zest and sugar in a pan. Add 2 cups water and boil for 10 minutes. Add figs and cook 3-4 minutes at a gentle simmer. Remove the pan from heat and let the figs cool in the spiced syrup. Remove figs and place in bowl. Return poaching liquid to the stove and cook at a simmer, reducing by half. Strain the mixture and pour over the figs. Let cool.
