Whenever someone would walk into Florio’s at 7701 Broadway, chances were good Joe Florio would there at his table near the door, talking with a customer waiting to place an order. Or he might be out on a delivery run, bringing a hot New York-style pizza to a family in the neighborhood.
The first image quickly came to mind when the news spread that Joe Florio had died on Tuesday.
The restaurant is closed from now until this coming Tuesday, a voice mail said because of “a death in the family.”
Visitation for Joseph Anthony Florio III will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Sunset Funeral Home, 1701 Austin Hwy. A funeral service at Sunset will be at 2 p.m. Saturday. Click here for the full obituary.
Before the family opened the pizza joint on Broadway, the Florios had a pizza stand at the Alamodome. Throughout the years, they’ve been known to root for the home team. Not the Spurs, mind you; but the New Jersey Nets from their original hometown in Paramus, N.J. On several occasions that proved to be a playful rivalry with the locals. But in the end, good pizza always won out, no matter who was playing basketball.
Our condolences go out to the whole Florio family.
