Culinaria Launches This Year’s Festival with Sip, Savor and Shop

Crowds flock into the Shops at La Cantera for Sip, Savor and Shop.

Wine and beer flowed in abundance Wednesday as about 1,400 people turned out for the annual Sip, Savor and Shop extravaganza that served as a kickoff  of this year’s Culinaria.

Blue Moon is more than just good beer. It's art.

The crowd was a great mix of people, some of whom showed up for the savory treats that restaurants such as Kirby’s Prime Steakhouse and 20nine served. Others were there for the shopping, as the stores at one end of the Shops at La Cantera offered tantalizing discounts for patrons of the event. And then there were those who showed for the wine and the beer, with a few even bringing their own glasses so they could enjoy the event a little better.

No matter the reason people turned out, most were grateful by the end of the evening to have had a chance to indulge in all three aspects of the event.

Brio served up a meaty ziti dish, while Z’Tejas offered a tuna ceviche treat. Flour Power Cafe offered samples of several types of cake, while Kirby’s served  up different varieties of chocolate truffles, including one with the kick of cayenne pepper. 20nine had a shrimp and scallop ceviche, while other treats included cheeses, pretzels and snacks to go with the assorted wines and craft beers.

Wines from around the world, ranging from the Montes Alpha Cabernet Sauvignon and Santa Ema Sauvignon Blanc from Chile to Cuvaison’s Charonnay and Pinot Noir from California’s Carneros region, kept people happy. Beer lovers had a series of good choices including Blue Moon, which sponsored a canvas that people could contribute to over the course of the evening.

It was a fun launch to the festival, which continues tonight with a series of special wine dinners, including a feast at the Westin La Cantera in which sommelier Steven Krueger will be pouring the Raymond Sommelier Series that he helped craft the blend of. Also new this year is the Food Truck event at the H-E-B Alon Market on Northwest Military Highway.

The Best of Mexico is at La Villita on Friday. The Grand Tasting follows on Saturday and Burgers, BBQ and Beer is at the Pearl on Sunday. For a full schedule of events, times, dates and ticket prices, click here.
