Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard is on the move, with changes and improvement to its facilities, a new adventure in its Passport Series — this time to Australia, and also announces a new chef, W. Scott Grimmitt.
Saundra Winokur, Sandy Oaks owner, says Grimmitt brings to the orchard kitchen extensive culinary experience on both a national and international level. He spent time cooking in Greece, Savannah, Ga., and at the renowned restaurant, Opus 251 in Philadelphia. Over the past 21 years, Grimmitt has also served as an executive chef in some of San Antonio’s top restaurants and hotels. These include The Fig Tree, La Louisianne, The Petroleum Club, Polos at the Fairmount Hotel, the Anaqua Grill at the Marriott Plaza Hotel, the St. Anthony Hotel and La Cantera Resort.
Winokur says Grimmitt’s experience includes “consulting for new restaurants, working as a private chef, and doing live cooking demos.” The chef says his approach to Sandy Oaks’ cuisine will be “country fresh and local”.
“The idea of simplicity and using the bountifulness of Sandy Oaks and the surrounding farms and ranches excites me,” says Grimmitt.
New landscaping, more, under way at the orchard
Facility improvements are under way at Sandy Oaks with the construction of a parking lot next to the new gift shop. This includes two handicapped spaces, with sidewalk access to the gift shop and outdoor kitchen. More landscaping will enhance these areas, plus, a wooden pergola is now up, expanding covered seating for viewing the orchard and enjoying the culinary offerings.
Passport Adventure Series: Australia
Sandy Oaks’ chef will be at the helm of the next culinary journey in the Passport Adventure Series, this time to Australia. The event takes you on a tasting tour of savory Australian olives and olive oils, with cheeses, wines and a full dinner menu (see below).
