Here's your chance to start from the ground up and become one with the vine with an eight-week grape discovery program. This wine camp is offered by 20nine Restaurant & Wine Bar in the Quarry, 255 E. Basse Road.Proprietor Troy Fulmer has a full schedule slated for wine campers, ages 21 and older, who attend this, the fourth summer season of wine camp. As wine camp director, Fulmer will lead attendees from vineyards to the perfect pour. Topics will include easy understanding of wine types, the basics of wine tasting, how wine is made from grape to glass, selecting wines and pairing wine with food. Five to six wines will be sampled at each session.
“We host Wine Camp each year for those that seek a better understanding of wine types, selections, history and tasting,” said Fulmer. “This is a perfect introduction that will assist in the selection and enjoyment of the right wine to suit one’s budget and taste.”
From Wine Camp’s dining hall, Scott Boone, executive chef, will be preparing savory selections from the new summer menu to complement each evening’s tasting. From savory to sweet, culinary offerings will complement "buttery notes" on a Chardonnay to a Merlot’s distinctive black cherry, plum or chocolate tastes.
After testing your taste buds - whose limited ability can only detect sweet, bitter, sour and salt - wine campers will learn to discern individual scents, which in turn allows you to “taste” hundreds of various food flavor nuances.
The first sessions begin July 10 and continue each Tuesday in July. The second sessions begins Aug. 7 and continue each Tuesday through Aug. 28. Wine camp is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sessions are $20 per session per person or $140 for all eight sessions. Attendance is limited and confirmation may be guaranteed by advance credit card payment.
