Daily Dish: Republic House Dishes Up the Blues

The Republic House has opened at 12333 West Ave.

Owner Millie Van Steenburg sees the place as a “downscale version of House of Blues crossed with MTV Unplugged.” Singer-songwriters are featured on the weekends now, and plans are afoot to expand the live music to more nights a week.

The menu features a host of seafood dishes, Kobe beef hamburgers, gumbo, and fried oyster po’boys in addition to some items you might not find elsewhere, including quail’s eggs and a New York strip prepared Pittsburgh style in that it is peppered and smoked.

The restaurant also offers you a chance to juice up your electric car outside. It’s just one of a number of environmentally conscious choices the restaurant is making. Others include converting its fry oil into biodiesel, which is used to fuel the catering truck, Van Steenburg says.

The Republic House is open 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Sunday-Thursday and 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Friday-Saturday. It currently has a wine/beer license. When it receives its full liquor license, the hours on the weekends will increase to 2 a.m.
