Find the Right Wine for Your Holiday Meal

Nothing complements holiday meals quite like the perfect wine pairing, write the folks at Go Texan. So, as you plan your holiday menu, keep Texas wine in mind. We have some suggestions on what to pair with your various holiday menus.

It pairs well with…

Fried, baked or roasted turkey pairs well with dry white wines such as Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio. If you prefer your turkey smoked or grilled, sip on a dry, red wine, such as Pinot Noir or Shiraz.
If you’re dining on steak or prime rib, pair a red wine like Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo or Sangiovese with your meal.

Chicken or seafood
For dishes with chicken, wild-caught Gulf shrimp or fish, try Chardonnay, Blanc du Bois, Chenin Blanc or Gewurztraminer to make the flavors sing.
Wild game
Hunters can sip Pinot Noir or Zinfandel with duck and quail, or Merlot or Syrah with wild boar.

To sample Texas wine with side dishes alone, uncork Cabernet Franc with cornbread stuffing or wild rice, and serve a sweet wine like a Muscato with your sweet potatoes.

Thanksgiving Dinner Options Abound (2010)

Thanksgiving 2010 is fast approaching. It’s time to make reservations for dinner, if you’re eating out, or placing orders for side dishes, pies and more. Here are some of the places in the San Antonio area that are celebrating in style. Reservations are required for most places, so call as early as possible. At the bottom are places offering turkeys, side dishes and desserts to help you complete your meal.

Achiote River Cafe, the Grand Hyatt, 600 E. Market St., 210-224-1234 — The buffet will run noon-9 p.m. It will feature pan-Latino mixed salads, carved roast turkey with traditional accompaniments, roasted pumpkin soup, pumpkin seed-crusted salmon, strip loin with wild mushroom sauce, horseradish mashed potatoes, candied yams in honey butter glaze, cranberry chutney, artisan breads and assorted holiday desserts. The cost is $30 a person including tax, tip and coffee, tea or soda.

Auden’s Kitchen, 700 E. Sonterra Blvd., Suite 1117, 210-494-0070 — The hours will be 11 a.m.-3 p.m. A prix fixe dinner for $28.95 includes choice of Caesar Salad or mixed greens, followed by baked salmon or Bourbon Peach-Glazed Turkey. Dessert is a choice of pumpkin cheese cake or Biga’s sticky toffee pudding. There will also be an a la carte menu with a crab omelet, a seared rib-eye, cumin-rubbed turkey and more. The children’s menu is priced at $11.99.

Biga on the Banks, 203 S. St. Mary’s St., 210-225-0722 — The Thanksgiving meal will be served 11 a.m.-7:30 p.m. It begins with a buffet of appetizers and salads, followed by the diner’s choice of entrée. Some of the main plate options include herb-roasted free-range turkey with the trimmings, free-range turkey mole poblano, molasses-rubbed prime rib, barbecued lamb open-faced ravioli, seared red snapper and baked Atlantic salmon. The dessert buffet includes Chocolate Pecan Tart, Butternut Cheesecake with Gingersnap Crust, Sweet Potato Pie, Maple Vanilla Creme Brulee, Pumpkin Tartlette with Sweet Whip Cream and a variety of kids desserts. Children’s options include chicken or turkey pasta, a child’s turkey plate and a child’s beef plate. The price is $49 for adults and $25 for children ages 12 and younger, plus tax and tip.

Casbeers at the Church, 1150 S. Alamo St., 210-271-7791 — A buffet of homemade, traditional Thanksgiving favorites will be served beginning at noon. The price is $15.95 for adults and half price for children 11 years and younger. The celebration moves upstairs between 1:30 2 p.m. for dessert and a showing of the movie “Alice’s Restaurant.” Filmed in 1969 it stars singer/songwriters Arlo Guthrie and Pete Seeger.

Crumpets, 3920 Harry Wurzbach Road, 210-821-5454 — From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., patrons can choose from a series of entrées, all served with an appetizer, bread, house salad and dessert (except children’s). Appetizer choices include mousse truffle pâté, smoked salmon with cream cheese, and puff pastry with white wine mushroom sauce. Entrée selections include roasted turkey and baked ham with stuffing ($28.50), beef tenderloin with red wine mushroom sauce or green peppercorn Cognac sauce ($35.50), fresh rainbow trout meunière or amandine ($28.50) or veal medallions with mushroom Cognac sauce ($33.50). The children’s menu for those under 10 includes turkey and ham with all the trimmings and choice of salad or dessert ($12). A tip of 18 percent will be added to parties of five or more. Crumpets also offers a variety of to-go options.

Earl Abel’s, 1210 Austin Highway, 210-822-3358  — Earl Abel’s will be serving Serving Thanksgiving meals 11 a.m. – 8 p.m.; regular hours are 6:30 a.m. – 11 p.m.  No reservations are being taken. For Thanksgiving there is Roast Turkey and Cornbread Dressing ($17);  Honey-glazed Country Ham with Creamy Mashed Potatoes and Pineapple Sauce ($18) ; Fried Chicken, two pieces white/dark with Creamy Mashed Potatoes and Chicken Gravy ($16); Niman Ranch Top Sirloin Steak with Baked Potato ($24); Fried Shrimp with Baked Potato ($19). All entrees come with  All entrees include choice of appetizer, vegetable, potato or cornbread dressing, dinner rolls, and dessert.  Notable new items on the menu include Deviled Eggs as an appetizer; Roasted Root Vegetables, and a Pumpkin Ginger Cake. Also, Sweet Potato Pecan Pie with Chantilly Cream and  Earl’s favorite Strawberry Shortcake.  A children’s menu will be available that includes roast turkey and dressing or fried chicken.  Each comes with green beans, cornbread dressing or mashed potatoes, and a dessert.

Frederick’s Bistro, 14439 N.W. Military Hwy., 210-888-1500 — The restaurant will be open on the holiday 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for lunch and 5-9 p.m. for dinner. A few of the entrée specials include Frederick’s traditional Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing ($20), Norwegian salmon ($19), jumbo sea scallops Provençal ($20), and black Angus beef rib-eye with grilled shrimp & béarnaise ($31). Dinner specials include the traditional turkey plate ($25), Parmesan-crusted Red Snapper with Avocado Relish ($28), Maine Lobster and Jumbo Lump Crab Meat Salad ($29) and Lamb Chop with Garlic Red Wine Sauce ($33).

Frederick’s Restaurant, 7701 Broadway, 210-828-9050 — The restaurant will be open 11 a.m.-3 p.m. for lunch and 5-9 p.m. for dinner. A few of the entrée specials include Frederick’s traditional Thanksgiving turkey with stuffing ($20), Norwegian salmon ($19), jumbo sea scallops Provençal ($20), and black Angus beef rib-eye with grilled shrimp & béarnaise ($31). Hyatt Hill Country, 9800 Hyatt Resort Drive, 210-647-1234 — A Feast of Flavors brunch will be served 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. A rustic soup station will include butternut squash soup, roasted eggplant bisque, onion soup, roasted tomato soup with dumplings, Texas chili and posole. The seafood offerings include jumbo shrimp, hand-shucked oysters, smoked salmon and smoked garlic mussels. The butcher block will feature citrus-coriander basted tom turkey, cider-brined roasted turkey legs, maple-glazed honey-baked ham and roast beef. Salads, a cranberry bar, traditional side dishes, breakfast items, a pasta station, a cheese kiosk, artisan breads and a buffet of desserts are included. There will also be a children’s buffet with traditional favorites. The cost is $45 for adults; $35 for seniors; $23 for children ages 5-12; and free for children 4 and under.

JW Marriott, 23808 Resort Parkway, 210-483-6622 — The buffet will be served 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Carving stations with tom turkey, prime rib and pecan-smoked bone-in ham will come alongside spreads of house-smoked salmon, shrimp cocktail and sushi as well as soups, salads, sides and a dessert spread. Lobster and edamame risotto and butternut squash gnocchi will be pan-made to order. A children’s buffet is offered. Champagne included. The cost is $49.95 for adults, $42.95 for seniors, and $22.95 for children ages 5-12.  A $5 discount on valet parking available for brunch visitors. For the full menu, click here.

Las Canarias, La Mansión del Rio, 112 College St., 210-518-1063 — The Thanksgiving buffet will be 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Carving stations will feature prime rib, roast turkey breast, grilled shrimp with chorizo, and Texas sausages from Elgin. The rest of the buffet will include unlimited Mumm sparkling wine, composed salads, local Texas cheeses, imported and domestic cheeses with seasonal fruits and berries, omelets and Belgium waffles. The cost is $65 for adults and $30 for children ages 5-12. The restaurant’s regular à la carte dining, with added holiday features, will resume at 5:30 p.m.

Limestone Grille, Ye Kendall Inn, 128 W. Blanco St., Boerne, 830-249-2138 – The holiday dinner will be 11 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Start with a choice of soup or salad, followed by entrée selections of slow-roasted herbed turkey, apple cider and herb-marinated roasted center cut of pork loin, mustard-crusted chateau loin of beef, and grilled salmon, all with seasonal side dishes. Dessert is Limestone Pumpkin Maple Pecan Pie. Cost is $25.95 for adults, $23.95 for seniors, and $12.95 for children ages 10 and younger.

Los Patios, 2015 N.E. Loop 410, 210-655-6171 – The Gazebo is offering a Thanksgiving lunch special daily through Nov. 30. It features roasted Cornish game hen, served with mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables and buttered biscuits for $11.95.  The restaurant is closed on Thanksgiving Day, but to-go orders are available all month. Advance notice recommended. To-go orders must be picked up by noon Nov. 24.

Luce Ristorante e Enoteca, 11255 Huebner Road, 210-561-9700 – Holiday hours are noon-5 p.m. The special menu for Thanksgiving begins with a choice of butternut squash soup with braised escarole, pancetta and a touch of cream or Insalate Misto with goat cheese ‘truffle.’ The main course is slow-roasted tom turkey with pine nut stuffing, sweet potatoes, giblet gravy, fresh fall vegetables and cranberry sauce, followed by pumpkin pie. The cost is $21.95 for adults and $7.95 for children under age 12.

Lüke, 130 E. Travis St., 210-226-9000 – On Thanksgiving day, hours will be 11 a.m.-11 p.m. Sample turkey two ways. One will be smoked turkey leg, the other is slow-cooked breast with corn bread dressing and stewed greens.  The lunch version includes soup ($15) while dinner is offered with soup and dessert ($23). Children’s meals are half price at both lunch and dinner.

Maggiano’s Little Italy, 17603 I-10 W., 210-451-6000 — Service will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cost for the special dinner is $32.95 for adults and $15.95 for children.

Menger Hotel, 204 Alamo Plaza, 210-223-4361 — The only times available for the Thanksgiving brunch are 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The cost of the buffet is $38.50 for adults and $15.95 for children ages 6-11.

Mike’s in the Village, 2355-3 Bulverde Road, Bulverde, 830-438-2747 – The Thanksgiving dinner is 11 a.m.-2 p.m. The special menu includes Butternut Squash Soup, Green Beans with Roasted Fennel and Shallots, Mashed Potatoes with Goat Cheese and Fresh Sage, Turkey Breast Roulade with Wild Mushroom and Pancetta Stuffing, and Pecan Pie with Bourbon Crème Anglaise The menu is priced at $24.95 for adults and $12 for children under age 12. Mike’s is also offering holiday food gifts, including Crawfish Cheesecake, as well as catering.

Mi Tierra Café y Panaderia, 218 Produce Row, 210-225-1262 – The restaurant will be open 24 hours and will offer two specials. One is a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with asparagus soup, roasted turkey, corn bread dressing, white wine giblet gravy, garlic mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables, cranberry sauce, candied yams, dinner rolls and pumpkin pie. The other is a Mexican Turkey en Mole Dinner with tamale corn bread dressing, asparagus soup, white rice with poblano peppers, and pumpkin pie. Both are priced at $14.25 plus tax and service charge. Children’s turkey plates cost $6.95.

Pomegranate at Artisans Alley, 555 W. Bitters Road, 210-494-9111 – It will be open 11 a.m.-2 p.m. with a traditional Thanksgiving buffet. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for children ages 4-12. Children ages 3 and under are free.

Q on the River Walk, Hyatt Regency, 123 Losoya St., 210-222-1234, ext. 4240 – The buffet will be served 11 a.m.-3 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Expect chimichurri-basted Angus strip sirloin, jumbo prawns, oakwood-smoked tom turkey, grilled currasco, Texas corn bread dressing, mashed potatoes, candied yams, cranberry-orange relish, pumpkin muffins, pies and mini-pastries on the buffet. Beverage bar included. The cost is $40 for adults, $36 for seniors and $20 for children ages 5-12. Complimentary self-parking at Central Parking across the street from the hotel.

Ventanas Bistro, Downtown Doubletree, 502 W. Durango St., 210-388-0356 – The Champagne brunch will be 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Carving stations will feature turkey and bone-in maple honey ham. Smoked strip loin of beef, blackened roasted pork loin, Atlantic salmon and grilled Balsamic chicken will be served along with seafood, traditional sides, salads, breakfast items and a dessert station with an assortment of cakes and pies. The price is $29 for adults or $19 for children ages 14 and younger. Complimentary parking.

Aldaco’s Mexican Cuisine, 20079 Stone Oak Parkway, 210-494-0561 — The restaurant will be closed on Thanksgiving, but people can place orders for Blanca Aldaco’s tres leches cake, available in pumpkin ($39.99) or with brandy ($44.99). These cakes serve up to 20 slices.

Bill Miller Bar-B-Q, various locations — Click here to order online. A 10- to 12-pound turkey with gravy and dressing costs $38.99, while an 18- to 20-pound turkey with gravy and dressing costs $59.99. Honey-glazed spiral cut ham costs $5.19 a pound. Party packs, pies and extras are also available.

Bohanan’s Prime Steaks & Seafood, 219 E. Houston St. #275, 210-472-2600 — From Nov. 22 to Dec 23, the restaurant will offer several holiday dishes, including Seared Hudson Valley Duck Breast with Huckleberry Jus and Pumpkin Spice Torte.

Central Market, 4821 Broadway, 210-368-8600 — Place orders by 2 p.m. Nov. 23. Order a traditional Thanksgiving dinner that serves 6-8 for $129.99. The lavender-white hickory smoked turkey dinner for 6-8 costs $139.99. A turkey breast dinner for 4-6 costs $99.99. The glazed white hickory-smoked ham dinner for 6-8 costs $99.99. The herb-roasted rib-eye dinner for 6-8 costs $159.99. The herb-crusted beef tenderloin dinner for 6-8 costs $169.99. The vegetarian hazelnut-fig roast en croûte for 2 costs $39.99. A package of holiday side dishes for 6-8 costs $49.99.

The County Line Barbecue, 10101 I-10 W., 210-641-1998 — Boneless, smoked, pepper-rubbed turkey breast is available for $12.99 a pound. The breasts are generally 4 pounds and feed 10-12 people. Orders accepted through Nov. 22. Cobblers are available in peach for $40 or harvest (Granny Smith apples, candied cranberries and walnuts) for $45. Each features 25-30 servings. Ruth’s Chris Steak House, 1170 E. Desserts for 8-10 people include pecan pie and bread pudding with whiskey sauce ($24.95 each). Desserts for 10-12 include a whole cheesecake or a whole Chocolate Sin Cake ($45 each).
