One Corner, Two Italian Restaurants

Two Italian-themed restaurants have opened on opposite sides of Tuscany Stone Road at Loop 1604.

Brusketa Ristorante, 18326 Tuscany Stone, is an independent restaurant tucked behind Kirby’s. The dining room is anchored in one corner by a wood-burning oven, where pizzas, steaks, tuna, portobello mushrooms and more are cooked.

The menu begins with antipasti that include roasted olives, octopus sashimi, carpaccio and frito misto of calamari and shrimp. Salads, such as a Caprese and a Caesar, and soups, including minestrone and tomato with basil are also available. Panini include a vegetarian option as well as a meat lover’s mix.

The pizza selection includes a Pork Lovers with pancetta, pepperoni and sausage; a Funghi with wild mushrooms; and a Magaña with white cheeses, anchovies, truffle oil and arugula.

There are numerous pasta dishes, Penne Diavola, Ravioli, Risotto Funghi, Spaghetti Bolognese, and fettuccine with either Alfredo or pesto sauce. Entrees include a rib-eye, a New York strip and beef tenderloin as well as a rack of lamb and salmon.

Mellow Mushroom

Mellow Mushroom, the first San Antonio location for a small chain, has opened at 115 N. Loop 1604 E.

Hoagies, pizzas and calzones are offered at the family-friendly place.

Hoagies run the gamut from meatball and spiked sausage to jerk chicken and tofu. You can build your own salad, calzone or pizza with specialty meats, cheeses, fruits, vegetables and nut.

Or choose a specialty pizza, such as the Thai Dye with curry chicken and Thai chili sauce; Red Skin Potato Pie with applewood-smoked bacon as well as potatoes; Bayou Blue with Andouille sausage and spicy blue cheese; and Magical Mystery Tour with button and portobello mushrooms as well as spinach, jalapeños and pesto.

Luce Ristorante e Enoteca, 11255 Huebner Road, (210) 561-9700 — Luce has a special menu for Mother’s Day and an a la carte menu. Hours are noon-4 p.m. The special menu features three courses for $29.95. Start with choice of Zuppa di Aragosta (Lobster Bisque), Caesar Salad or Caprese (Tomato Slices and Fresh Mozzarella di Latte, Basil and Olive Oil). Features include an omelet station, carved to order Creole Seasoned Rib Eye, Herbed Roasted Turkey Breast, Roasted Salmon with Lemon Butter Sauce, Spinach and Smoked Bacon Quiche, Rosemary and Garlic New Potatoes, Orzo Pasta, Glazed Baby Carrots, Smothered Green Beans, Garden Salad, Tropical Fruit Salad and White Chocolate Bread Pudding with Rum Sauce. Oro at the Emily Morgan, 705 E. Q on the Riverwalk, 123 Losoya St., (210) 362-6325 — The Mother’s Day buffet will be from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Features include a grand salad display; hand-carved roasted meats including prime rib, apricot-glazed pork loin and tamarind-glazed salmon; breakfast items including made-to-order omelets, pancakes, poached eggs, brisket hash, bacon, sausage and breakfast potatoes; and a dessert display. Romo’s Cafe, 7627 Culebra Road, (210) 521-7666 — Romo’s will be offering brunch on Saturday and Sunday, May 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with its regular menu plus blackboard specials on Saturday. The chef promises a selection of handcrafted and unique recipes for the occasion as well as a variety of mimosas and a three-course prix fixe option with a complimentary rose for Mom.

Sandy Oaks Olive Orchard, 25195 Mathis Road, Elmendorf, (210) 621-0044 — Treat Mom to lunch Saturday, May 12, in the beauty of the olive trees at Sandy Oaks. A free tour is at 11 a.m. followed by lunch from noon to 3 p.m. On the menu: Bone-in chicken breast stuffed with Boursin and spinach with olive pan jus and whipped potatoes ($10) or, for the kids, a mini-cheeseburger with Sandy Oaks home fries and sweet pickles ($8). Dessert is Sandy Oaks’ Famous Olive Oil Pound Cake with Macerated Texas Peaches and Chantilly Cream ($4).

Texas  Roadhouse, various locations — Texas Roadhouse is celebrating Mother’s Day May 10-13 by collecting entries from moms for a two-night stay at the Ritz-Carlton in Dove Mountain, Ariz.

It’s Almost Easter. Time to Get Your Bonnet and Your Brunch Reservations.


The Easter Bunny is coming, and he’s bringing plenty of wonderful treats for your special holiday meal. Here are a few choices that await you, in various price ranges.

Gallo spices up the San Antonio pizza scene

Gallo Pizzeria has opened at 164 Castroville Road.

The restaurant specializes in hot and spicy pizzas as well as wings. Prices range from $10.95 for a medium and $12.95 for a large. That is, except for the Diablo, a specialty pizza with diced habanero, jalapeños and ghost peppers with the house diablo sauce. It is priced at $3.95 for a small, $9.95 for a medium and $19.95 for a large.

Other specialty pizzas include the Veggie Delight (mushrooms, onions, spinach, bell pepper and olives), the Chanchi Pizza (avocado chunks, black olives, and red onions on a spicy bean sauce),  the Gallo Pizza (chicken, spinach, and sliced tomatoes with Salsa Mexicana sauce), the Mexican Margarita (fresh tomatoes garnished with dried basil served on Salsa Italiano).

Though the label may be private, here are the pairings for the evening: Chardonnay matched with chicken breast wrapped in bacon and smoked salmon crostini with creme fraiche; Merlot with goat cheese crostini with asparagus, garlic picanha and Brazilian sausage; and Cabernet Sauvignon with flank steak with chimichurri and Parmesan pork.

It’s Back to the Pit at County Line

Blueberry-Pecan Crumble Pie is on the menu at the next County Line Pitmaster Cooking Class.

The County Line at 10101 I-10 W. is resuming its popular Pitmaster Cooking Classes with chef Garrett Stephens on the first Fridays of the month. The next two classes are scheduled for Sept. 9 and Oct. 7. Both begin at 7 p.m.

Class participants will enjoy a full serving of each of the four courses that Stephens demonstrates. He also takes questions from the guests while he cooks in an evening that is keeps everyone entertained. A recipe book with room for notes is also included.

The Sept. 9 menu will feature: Bacon-Wrapped Grilled Quail with a Maker’s Mark Jalapeño Glaze; Pit-fired Summer Vegetables with Fresh Basil and Balsamic; Herb-crusted Smoked Prime Rib with Creamed Horseradish and Lemon-Thyme Campfire Potatoes; and Blueberry-Pecan Crumble Pie with Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream.

LangeTwins Wines will be paired with each course.

Since the grill will be fired up, the cooking class will be held outside on the restaurant’s shaded patio; in case of rain, the class will be moved inside.

On May 8, it’s all about Mom. Remember all she’s done for you and treat her right. Treat her to the dinner of her choice. The following restaurants range in style from prime steakhouses to extensive buffets to barbecue in the great outdoors.

Boardwalk Bistro, 4011 Broadway, 210-824-0100 — Mother’s Day brunch will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. A three-course menu will be offered, varying in price from $20 to $32 a person depending upon the entrée selected. Appetizer choices include lobster-asparagus bisque, tomato-basil bisque, a mini-Belgian waffle and Waldorf salad. Entrée options: Eggs Benedict, three-egg omelet, smoked Black Forest Ham on pumpernickel French toast, crab cake, honey-glazed spiral baked ham, and Chateaubriand. What’s Shakin’ This Fiesta? Some Fun Cocktails


Want to keep that Fiesta spirit going? Try one of these cocktails from several restaurants around town. Two come from Bohanan’s Bar, 219 E. Houston St.; a third comes from Wildfish Seafood Grille, 1834 N. Loop 1604 W.; and the last from Roaring Fork, 1806 N. Loop 1604 W.

Have fun playing around with the ingredients so you get the drink you’d like. That could mean a little more ginger beer in one, a little less Tabasco sauce in another. And enjoy.

Take a shaker with a little ice, cucumbers, lime juice and olive juice, and muddle together. Fill shaker with ice, add Rain Cucumber Vodka, Zing Zang, a splash of Worcestershire and Tabasco, to taste. Shake well. Serve in a salted rim martini glass with a Bud Light on the side.

Garnish with cucumber, cocktail onion, and a blue cheese-stuffed olive flag.

Makes 1 cocktail.

10 ounces frozen margarita
Roaring Fork Red Sangria (recipe below)
Lime wedge, orange wedge and cherry for garnish

Red Sangria:
4 ounces red wine
2 ounces raspberry purée
2 ounces huckleberry purée or blueberry purée

Take a glass with 10 ounces of frozen margarita in it. Swirl in red sangria. Garnish with lime, orange and cherry.

To make Red Sangria, mix wine and purées.

Easter is a little late this spring, but it’s no less welcome. So, as April 24 approaches, it’s time to think of more than baskets and chocolate, bonnets and flowers. It’s time to think about where you should make reservations for the big dinner.

Coco Chocolate Lounge & Bistro, 18402 U.S. 281 N., 210-491-4480 — The Easter brunch is  10 a.m.-3 p.m. It features a complete buffet, which includes lamb, an egg station, a made-to-order crepe station, and an appetizer buffet with shrimp, smoked salmon and bagels, charcuterie and cold cuts, goat cheese dip, hummus and assorted cheese. The dessert buffet includes a chocolate fountain, an assortment of house-made mini chocolate desserts, chocolate mousse, coconut passion cheesecake, white chocolate cheesecake, peach cobbler, mini crème brûlée, chocolate-dipped strawberries and fresh fruits. Tips for Making Great Latkes


Latkes at Roaring Fork

Roaring Fork, 1806 N. Loop 1604 W., will be serving latkes during Hanukkah, Dec. 1-8. The fried potato cakes will be paired with applesauce.

Jewish people traditionally eat fried food during Hanukkah to commemorate the oil that was supposed to only last one night, yet miraculously burned for eight days when the Maccabees purified and rededicated the holy Temple in Jerusalem more than 2,000 years ago following their victory over the Greeks, according to the restaurant.  Fried potato pancakes (“latkes in Yiddish or “levivot” in Hebrew) are a Jewish culinary tradition that dates back at least 900 years.

“Growing up, I looked forward to latkes at the dinner table this time of year, so seeing them at Roaring Fork brings back a lot of memories,” said Barbra Hamil, general manager of the restaurant. “This is the start of a great tradition at the restaurant.”

Executive chef Matt Inouye offers the following tips if you are making latkes at your home:

  • Purée slightly to make the potatoes lacey.
  • Soak the potatoes in club soda to keep them white and crisp.
  • Purée slightly after shredding to give them a more delicate mouth feel.
  • If too loose, use a little potato flour to help them crisp.

Latkes Available at Roaring Fork


Latkes are available at Roaring Fork, 1806 N. Loop 1604 W., during the Hanukkah season.

The fried potato pancakes will be available Saturday through Dec. 19.

Latkes are traditionally eaten during Hanukkah to commemorate the oil that miraculously burned for eight days when the temple was rededicated more than 2,000 years ago. (Click here for more history.)

“Growing up, I looked forward to latkes at the dinner table this time of year, so seeing them at Roaring Fork brings back a lot of memories,” said Babra Hamil, general manager of Roaring Fork. “This is the start of a great tradition at the restaurant.”

“Latkes are going to be a perfect fit for just about everything from our freshly flown-in salmon to the new rack of lamb,” said Harold Marmulstein, executive chef of the restaurant. “You don’t have to be Jewish to appreciate potato pancakes with entrees from our wood-fired oven, grill or rotisserie.”
