Tangeré is a Spanish word for touch. It’s also the name of a new restaurant at 4230 McCullough Ave. that chef Erick Abrams hopes will touch your taste buds.

The onion soup with Gruyère will remind you of France, while the jamon Iberico Férmin will transport you back to Spain. Gnocchi and duck confit ravioli conjure images of Italy, and tagine of lamb and harissa summons memories of Morocco.

For dessert, sample a limoncello soufflé or an apple tarte tatin made to order.

True Love Meets Burger Love – A Smashburger Wedding

Some weddings really don’t stand out from one another.  Oftentimes, once wedding season hits, it feels like the cookie cutters have come out for the same old white dresses and standard reception food.

George and Paula Roberts aren’t having that kind of wedding.  Instead, they entered and won the “I Want a Smashburger Wedding” video contest.

The couple, married for 10 years, are restating their pledge of love to each other, as well as proclaiming their “burger love”.  The early morning wedding will be televised on KABB-TV’s “Fox News First”; the vows are scheduled for 8:10 a.m.

The red- and white-themed event, coordinated by Jennifer Ramirez Jasiczek of A Regal Affair, will take place at the Stone Ridge location.  The wedding package includes all those things that make a wedding— hair styling and makeup for the bride, decorations and favors for a reception of 50 guests, and a cake.  They will also receive a honeymoon at The Mirage in Las Vegas with tickets to see Terry Fator Ventriloquism.  Dinner will be, of course, Smashburger Las Vegas.

If you are interested in watching, tune in on television or attend in person.  Instead of gifts, they encourage people bring canned food items for the San Antonio Food Bank.  Attendees will receive a Smashbuck for a free burger to be used at a later date.  The winning video can be viewed on the event website: www.smashburgerwedding.com

It’s a Smash!

Smashburger1Tom Ryan knows his burgers.

When he worked at McDonald’s, he developed the Dollar Menu and McGriddles.

Then he launched his own chain, SmashBurger, in 2007. From the initial Denver store that June, the chain has grown to more than 40 in little more than two years’ time.

The 41st opens Friday at 11309 Bandera Road at Loop 1604 in the Bandera Pointe Shopping Center. It’s the third to open in San Antonio this year under the direction of franchisee SB Alamo, which has the rights to South Texas as well as all of New Mexico. A fourth will open in early 2010 at State Highway 151 and Potranco Road. (Another recent SmashBurger opening to make the news was at the DFW airport, where Mark Columbo of the Dallas Cowboys opened a franchise store.)

Smashburger4

Tom Ryan

Though he worked under the golden arches and developed the stuffed-crust pizza at Pizza Hut, Ryan didn’t want to offer fast food at his chain. Nor did he want to create a sit-down environment like you find at Fuddrucker’s or Red Robin. His goal was somewhere in between, he said during a brief visit in San Antonio. So, Smashburger became what in the trade is known as a “fast-casual” restaurant where you order at the counter and have someone serve your food to your table.

That food could be a SmashBurger made with ground Angus chuck, a milk shake made with Häagen-Dazs ice cream, or a jumbo wedge salad topped with real blue cheese crumbles and bacon. It could also be crispy thin fries, which Ryan admitted were fried with a touch of beef tallow (a style that harkens back to the 1970s), and seasoned with a touch of rosemary. Veggie frites are flash-fried green beans, carrots and asparagus spears.

Smashburger2The menu seems like a good fit for San Antonio, Ryan said. The folks here love their burgers, and on an index of what’s offered, “the space we fill was still pretty vacant,” he said.

Customers are finding the sauces served at SmashBurger to be another draw, whether they want to dip their fries into the chipotle mayo or the zesty petal sauce. Mixing and matching ingredients is something customers enjoy doing, Ryan says. “I think customers like to own a part of what they’re eating,” he said. “Here, you don’t have to go out of your way to get it your way.”

Sounds like the slogan of another burger chain.

Ryan’s dreams for SmashBurger are anything but modest, yet he’s willing to do what it takes as he strives for his goal: “We want to become everybody’s favorite burger.”

Smashburger No. 3 Opening at Bandera Pointe

Smashburger, a fast‐casual burger restaurant,  is opening its third San Antonio location at Bandera Road and Loop 1604 in the Bandera Pointe Shopping Center on Nov. 17.  The new location will introduce a Texas Smashburger to cater to bold Texas tastes.

Smashburger entered the San Antonio market in earlier this year at Stone Ridge, U.S. 281 at Evans Road, and at Park North, Loop 410 and Blanco Road.

This holiday season, Smashburger is partnering with the San Antonio Police Department’s Blue Santa program. From now until Nov. 30, all three Smashburger locations will be designated toy drop‐off points for the program. The donated toys go to needy San Antonio children during the holidays.

Also, on Dec. 5 and Dec. 12, for each Smashburger Texas Burger sold, $1 will go to SAPD’s Blue Santa program.
