Guests will be able to savor the tastes, sounds, and sights of the holiday season and celebrations in the city.

The Tamales! Holiday Festival at Pearl has evolved into a regionally and nationally recognized celebration of San Antonio’s vibrant culture and cuisine associated with the holidays.

At this free event, more than 20 different tamale vendors will be showcased, ranging from traditional San Antonio classics to South American and everything in between. Culinary students, celebrated restaurants and venerated chefs will showcase a blend of innovative twists and classic techniques, all with the traditional Central American dish wrapped in corn husks or banana leaves and steamed, the tamale.

In addition to the food, there will also be live music and entertainment for the entire family. For more information, visit www.atpearl.com or follow the Pearl on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Christmas Is Coming. That Means It’s Time for Tamales!

Tamales! returns to the Pearl Saturday.

Christmas meals mean tamales in many San Antonio homes. So, it’s a sign that the season is drawing near when the annual Tamales! Holiday Festival returns to Pearl Brewery.

The third annual celebration will be from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.

“We’re so excited to invite all of San Antonio to come celebrate the holidays at our third annual Tamales! Festival,” said Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer at Pearl. “This event is becoming a real San Antonio tradition, and it’s so great to see people from near and far get together to enjoy great food, music and to honor our San Antonio culinary traditions.”

There will be more than 35 different tamale vendors, and visitors will be invited to explore the full range of tamales from traditional San Antonio classics to South American to sweet, vegetarian and many more. The Culinary Institute of America, San Antonio will partner with Pearl to bring the whole property to life with the new Brew House Plaza, Boiler House alley and outdoor kitchen. Regional amateurs, culinary students, popular restaurants and esteemed chefs will showcase a blend of innovation, experimentation and classic tamales. Among the participants are chefs Jesse T. Perez and Johnny Hernandez, Los Barrios and Tellez

The competition features such categories as best chicken tamal, best pork tamal, a wild card category and, new this year, best tamal using H-E-B Primo Picks products.

Pearl Farmers Market will still take place this Saturday, but it will be in the East Parking lot of the Full Goods building for this one time.

Pearl is located 303 Pearl Parkway. For more information about events at Pearl, visit www.atpearl.com.

Tamales at Pearl Festival is Dec. 3

Tamales at Pearl  – A Holiday Family Festival will be Dec. 3 at the Pearl Brewery.  The daylong event is, as its name suggests, very family friendly.

During the holidays tamales, which are an everyday San Antonio treat, really come into their own. This celebration at the Pearl is fast on its way to becoming a tradition as well.

The event is free, and, just as last year, thousands of tamales will be brought to the market for sale — and thousands will disappear. Johnny Hernandez of La Gloria Ice House says last year’s favorites were the Oaxacan and Vera Cruz styles.

In addition to these corn-husk-wrapped Mexican delicacies (and sometimes banana-leaf-wrapped) the festival will feature booths from San Antonio restaurants, a tamal-making contest, music, dancing and family activities.

Tamales! At Pearl a Festive First

It’s free, it’s new, and it could become a San Antonio pre-holiday tradition.

Tamales are the stars of the show at the new Tamales! festival at the Pearl.

“Tamales! At Pearl … A Holiday Family Festival” was a huge success Saturday, said organizers.

“I knew we had a winner when we got 210 entries for the tamal-making contest,” said Shelley Grieshaber, culinary services director for the Pearl. It was her job to taste all of the entrees, then screen the best five selections in each category for judges.

While judges went into a conference room at the nearby Culinary Institute of America, it was a typical crowd scene outside, with kids in strollers, dogs, and families enjoying a beautiful day and plenty of food and drink.

The tamales unwrapped at the contest ranged from traditional pork and chicken to “wild card” entries. A sweet dessert tamal, with pineapple and almond-flavored masa, took that category. (Winners will be announced on SavorSA.)

In addition to tamales, folks enjoyed empanadas, beef anticuchos, rib-eye fajita tacos, chicken-stuffed poblano rellenos, bacon-wrapped chicken and jalapeño bites, rajas (roasted chile strips), desserts and Mexican coffee and hot chocolate. Vendors enjoyed long lines outside their booths, with caterers such as RK Group and Don Strange of Texas also contributing some of their popular specialties.

Mariachis played most of the day, including an all-woman group, Mariachis Alteñas, whose tight rhythms and strong vocals drew a crowd of its own.

“This is a great event,” said Cheryl Mijangos, who, with her husband Alberto “Beto” Mijangos, were at their booth for their restaurant, Beto’s.
